Sacred Calling Meaning
Work as a necessary activity refers to work that is undertaken primarily for the purpose of earning a living, rather than for personal fulfillment or meaning. For some individuals, work is simply a means to an end, a way to pay the bills and provide for their basic needs. While work as a necessary activity can be fulfilling in its own way, it may not provide the same sense of purpose or meaning as work as a sacred calling.
Nothing wrong with that. I believe there are things in life we have to do and choose to do simply because that is what is required of us in the moment.
Is Work Fulfilling?
Overall, the main difference between work as a sacred calling and work as a necessary activity is the level of personal meaning and fulfillment that an individual derives from their work. While work as a sacred calling can be deeply fulfilling and meaningful, work as a necessary activity may be more transactional in nature, focused on the exchange of labor for compensation.
There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God. Ecclesiastes 2:24
Personal Fulfillment and Purpose
Running a business can be a deeply fulfilling and meaningful endeavor for many individuals, especially if it aligns with their passions and values. When an individual is able to turn their ideas and goals into a tangible reality, it can be a source of great pride and satisfaction.
Furthermore, the process of building and growing a business allows individuals to use their unique talents and skills to create something of value and make a positive impact in the world. This can be a deeply fulfilling and rewarding experience, as it allows individuals to feel like they are making a meaningful contribution to society and leaving a lasting legacy.
Work as a sacred calling can be a source of deep personal fulfillment and satisfaction, and it often involves a sense of dedication and commitment to a cause or purpose that goes beyond simply earning a paycheck.
Positive Impact on Others
A business can also be a sacred calling if it has the potential to positively impact the lives of others. For example, a business that provides essential products or services to the community can be a source of purpose and meaning for those involved in the business, as it allows them to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
Similarly, a business that works to address social or environmental issues can be a source of meaning and purpose for those involved, as it allows them to contribute to the greater good and make a positive impact on the world.
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.
Philippians 3:13-15
Find Your Sacred Calling
Finally, running a business can be a sacred calling if it allows an individual to grow and develop spiritually. The challenges and opportunities presented by running a business can provide a sense of purpose and meaning that goes beyond material success and allows for personal growth and development.
For some, the process of building and growing a business can be a deeply enriching and transformative experience. It allows them to tap into their inner strength and resilience, and to learn and grow through challenges and setbacks. In this way, running a business can be a path to spiritual growth and self-discovery. It helps individuals to connect with their inner selves and find greater meaning and purpose in their lives.
Fulfillment and Reaching Business Goals
I firmly believe that it’s not as much about accomplishing the goals as it is who you become on the way.
Headed into 2023, I am grateful for who I’ve become in business. I trust God's direction and provision even more. I’ve learned not every business decision is about business. I am confident and kinder. So, I judge less.
I listen more and rely on my team more. I am more vulnerable with trusted colleagues so that I can learn from them. I’ve gotten better at having a blended life, ministry and business this year even while simultaneously establishing better boundaries.
